Yep, you read it right! Libre ang entrance sa zoo na ito. Nagawi lang kami ng pinsan ko sa Vigan para madalaw niya ang boypren niya. And that time, bagong bukas pa lang ang Baluarte. Buti na lang, walay ang boypren ni cousin kaya na-discover namin ang Baluarte. :) Mula noon, lagi nang kasama sa Ilocos itinerary ni Teh ang lugar na ito.

Noon, medyo konti pa ang animals, pati ang mga turista. Pero ngayon, medyo nakakaloka na pumunta rito kasi ang dami nang visitors. And that's great, kasi kahit pa paano, nakatulong ito sa paglago ng turismo ng Vigan. At siyempre, damay-damay na rin sa mga karatig-bayan ng Vigan na may tourist spots, tulad ng Church sa Bantay at Beach sa Sulvec, Narvacan.

Ang zoo na ito ay pag-aari ni Manong Chavit (Gov. Chavit Singson), and impressively, ang dami niyang alagang hayop sa zoo/semi-safari na ito. Well, I say this is a semi-safari because may mga animals na free gumorla at any point of the zoo. Tulad ng mga deer na makikita mo kaagad sa bungad ng zoo. :)

Hindi naman nakakatakot, kasi muhkang tame naman sila. Err, hindi lahat. Kasi exception minsan 'yung ibang mga ostrich. May mga mababait na ostrich. Pero 'pag inasar mo, makakarinig ka ng tili habang hinahabol ka ng tuka nila. Buti na lang, ang isang 'to, iniisip niyang nakakulong siya at hindi niya kami maaabot. Hehe! (Bleh! =P) Enjoy din asarin ang ostrich na 'to. ^_^

~ Animal Feeding ~

One of the main attractions in Baluarte is actually Teh's favorite activity - feeding the animals! ^_^ Specifically, mga ostrich at deer ang pupuwedeng pakainin ng mga dahong nakadisplay sa bars na humaharang sa mga animals by the zoo proper.

Ostrich: >crunch, crunch, crunch< ('Di ko na aawayin si Teh. ^_^)

~ Birds of the different feathers~

Birds... seen at the left side of the zoo proper

To the immediate left of the zoo proper, facing the Baluarte sign, makikita natin ang ilang species ng mga ibon. Some of them that I was able to see were parrots, sun parakeets and rufus hornbills. Pero I never heard the parrot talk, I only saw him standing proud. Karamihan sa kanila, hindi nakakulong at merong tree branches na mapapagtambayan. Kaya lang, hindi rin maiaalis na ikulong ang ibang ibon, tulad ng black bird sa picture na nasa kulungan (sorry, hindi knowledgable si Teh sa mga pangalan ng ibon, kaya kung black ang ibon, eh 'di black bird! :D).

Sa kanilang lahat ng mga ibon, sa Sun Parakeet ako natuwa talaga. No'ng una, akala ko, parrot lang din siya. Pero may iba pa pala siyang pangalan. Nakakatuwa ang ibon na 'to kasi sa lahat ng ibon doon, isa siya sa mga allowed pakainin. Siyempre, with the supervision ng nag-aalaga sa kanya, at meron siyang special food. Parang dried fruit siya na hindi ko maintindihan ang itsura. 'Yun nga lang, 'nung papakainin ko na siya, tinarayan ako. X_X

Among the bird species, masasabi kong pinaka-behave, (or pinaka-dedma sa visitors), ay ang Rufus Hornbill. Kasi, wala lang sa kanya 'pag kinukulit siya ng visitors. Parang sundalo ang drama ng bird na ito, kasi standing proud lang siya sa tree branch forever. :))

~ Piggy back ride animals ~

Baluarte is a very kid-friendly place. Kasi the place has animals available for back-ride,  specifically for photo opportunity. Madalas, sasakay ang bata, picture, then alight. Bihira akong makakita ng sumasakay na bata tapos iikutin ang zoo with the animal. Depende kung sino ang naka-out for public, maaaring makapicture ng mga chikiting ang baby camel, pony, or ostrich (for adventurous kids who are not afraid of getting a butt slap courtesy of the ground).

Ang pony na hinahaplos ni Teh kasi malungkot siya... ^_^

Siyempre, kung may pang-kids, puwede ba namang walang pang-oldies? May mga mini-kalesa (ewan ko kung tama 'yung term ko) na puwedeng sakyan ng 2-4 persons. Free ang pagsakay dito. Ang route ninyo ay mula sa entrance ng zoo proper hanggang sa kabilang dulo ng grasslands, then pabalik sa starting point. Pagkasakay namin ng pinsan ko, during halfway of the ride, nakiusap ang batang kutsero na bigyan siya ng tip, kahit bente lang (at talagang nagbigay ng minimum amount). Natawa na lang kami ng pinsan ko kaya ayun, na-holdap. Akala namin libre eh. Hehehe. Para masulit ang bente, nagpapicture na lang kami habang nakasakay sa mini-kalesa.

Kaya lang, medyo naaawa ako sa mga pony na nakakabit sa mini-kalesa. Child labor kasi... :(

Additional attractions na hindi na na-visit ni Teh ay ang Chapel sa bungad ng zoo, Casino and Animal Shows (4x a day).

Worth-it ang pagbisita ko rito, and the location is really nice, kasi kahit every year ako nagpapabalik-balik, laging may bagong animals na nadadagdag sa zoo na ito... ^_^
