Ilocandia Revisited ~ The South

At ngayon, ikukuwento naman ni Teh ang second part ng Ilocandia adventures with ADHICs. This time, samahan kaming mag-explore sa Vigan and its nearby town, Bantay. :)

On the second evening of our Ilocandia trip we stayed in Vigan, sa mga pinsan ni Teh, para makatipid ng accommodation. At siyempre para mabisita na rin ang mga pinsan, tita at lolo ko. Isang barangay kasi kamag-anak ko sa Vigan, father's side ni Mudra.

~ Plaza Burgos, Vigan Cathedral and Rizal Park ~

Location: Vigan

Recommended Time of Visit: Evenings, especially after Church Mass para lively

Anyway, we started the night with Vigan Empanada, Isaw and Okoy in front of Plaza Maestro. Then after that, we strolled around Plaza Burgos para masulit ang oras. Tambay konti tapos lakad-lakad para ma-burn ang fats galing sa mga finood-trip namin. :)

Medyo late na kaming nagpunta ng centro kasi naligo pa kami. Paano kasi, hindi kami nakaligo bago umalis ng Pagudpud sa lamig ng tubig. (Eh medyo kadiring mga turista hahaha. Malay ba nila?) Ooops, too much info. :))

The bottomline is, sarado na ang Vigan Cathedral pagdating namin. Sayang hindi nakapag-wish 'yung dalawang kasama ni Teh. Unang punta eh.

Isa pang hindi namin naabutan ay ang dancing fountain ng Rizal Park. Around 7~8PM daw kasi meron. Eh kumusta naman kasi 9PM na kami nakarating. 'Di bale, next time... -_-

Mabuti na lang at may ilaw pa ang mga Christmas tree sa paligid ng Kapitolyo. Eh 'di do'n na lang kami nag-picture-picture. :3

FYI, kung curious kayo about former Pres. Quirino's statue, kung bakit meron sa Vigan niyan, it is because he was born in Vigan. One of the Ilocano prides.

~ Calle Crisologo ~

Location: Vigan

Recommended Length of Visit: 1~2 hours

Sa daming beses nang nakapunta ni Teh rito, this was the only time na nabisita ko ang kalyeng ito ng gabi. This old road, impassable by motor vehicles, only by kalesas and walking pedestrian, was named after a famous political clan in Ilocos Sur. Travel back in time as you traverse this road. (Meh gano'n?)

~ Sidestory: The Cornfields ~

Location: Vigan

Recommended Time of Visit: Actually, napahinto lang...

Yes napahinto lang talaga kami rito at kung hindi nga naman kami tinamaan nang malas flat ang isang gulong ng sasakyan namin. At ang nakakatawa pa, flat din ang reserba. Kakaloka lang pero nanghiram lang kasi si Teh ng sasakyan. Mga lolo ko kasi gumagamit so hindi na gaanong na-maintain. Sa pagtitipid namin. So habang nag-aantay ng ipapalit na gulong (salamat sa hubby ng pinsan ko), eh tambay ganda at pogi muna kami sa pinangyarihan ng pagkaflat ng gulong. Inabot na rin kami ng umaga. Sadly, we had to cancel yung visit sa grotto in Sulvec, Narvacan dahil sa tire condition ng gamit naming sasakyan. (Next time na lang din...)

~ Banaoang Bridge ~

Location: Bantay-Santa boundary

Recommended Length of Visit: 30 minutes (mainit kaya)

After a typhoon destroyed this bridge, sinara na ito sa mga motorista. But then, hindi nila totally sinara ito para sa mga mahilig magpicture tulad namin. (Yey!)

Mag-jumpshot, mag-meditate o humiga sa kalye. Only in Banaoang bridge, where it is possible to make it alive after doing such poses. :))

How can I possibly miss this view? Noong high school pa lang ako, gusto ko nang makunan 'to. Nakunan ko naman kaso medyo buwis-buhay noon. This time, Teh was so free to do so. ^_^

Few drive away from the bridge, within Santa's territory, merong viewdeck doon kung saan puwede mong ma-view ang buong bridge. Notice the third part of the bridge? Before siya nasira nang tuluyan, inayos pa nila 'yan by removing the trusses of the third portion kasi doon may sira dati. Kaso lang natuluyan na talaga nung 2010 so fully impassable na siya as of today. Display na lang siya, gano'n. Mabuti at pin reserve pa siya ng gobyerno for tourist attraction. :)

~ Bantay Church and Bell Tower ~

Location: Bantay

Recommended Length of Visit: 30 minutes~1 hr or longer if you attend the mass

Another old church in Ilocandia that you must visit mga teh! At siyempre pa, don't forget to wish kung first time mong bumisita rito. :)

Dahil naiinitan ang mga friendships ko, dalawa na lang kami ng pinsan kong umakyat sa bell tower. Medyo sad 'no? :)) Sayang, ang ganda pa naman ng view sa taas (if you exclude Teh sa photo sa baba hehe).

~ Pagburnayan ~

Location: Vigan

Recommended Length of Visit: 30 minutes

~ Hidden Garden ~

Pinapili ni Teh kung saan tutungo ang ADHICs and cousins - kung dito ba o sa Baluarte. Dahil naiinitan kaming lahat, jaran! Dito kami tumungo.

Can you spot kung sinong pagod at dumiretso nang higa? :))

Para bumenta ang isang garden, dapat maganda ang pagkaka-landscape. 2nd time na ni Teh rito pero I'll still be glad to visit this again. Very rejuvenating, relaxing, ano pa ba? Hehe... :D

Kung may favorite spot si Teh sa Hidden Garden, ito siguro 'yung portion na 'yon. May collection kasi dito ng Theravada Buddhist art. ^_^

~ Food trip: Uno Grille ~

Location: Vigan

Last meal before going back home. Kaya we ordered Ilocano dishes for lunch as much as possible. Kahit alam kong sawa na mga pinsan ko diyan. Saying goodbye to bagnet and dinengdeng... ~_~

~ Pasalubong Hunting at Vigan Market ~

Location: Vigan

Maski saan tayo magpunta, it is very common na 'pag nalamang turista tayo eh pahirapan ang pagtawad sa bilihin. Salamat sa pinsan ni Teh, kasi siya nakipag-usap sa tindera to make tawad for us. Thanks cousin! ^_^

Vigan Carrozas ~ The Black Parade

Heto na ang last installment of Teh's Holy Week Trilogy, featuring the Procession of Vigan Carrozas showing the events prior to and during Jesus' death. 

Ginaganap ito tuwing Good Friday, after ng Siete Palabras[1] sa Vigan Cathedral, around 5PM onwards (pero minsan 6PM nagsisimula). Ang prusisyon na ito ay nagsisimula sa simbahan at dadaan sa... hindi alam ni Teh. X_X Parating nasa gilid lang kasi ako at nanonood ng mga dumadaang carroza upang lahat sila ay makunan ko ng picture. Kapag sumama ako sa prusisyon, hindi ko sila makikitang lahat (malamang). Tulad ng mga ibang mga turista (at feeling turista like Teh), isa ito sa much-awaited event during Holy Week sa Vigan. As in hindi mahulugang-karayom ang dami ng taong ilang oras na nag-aabang para makita ang prusisyon.

Share ko lang ano, at dahil lahat naman ng nasa blog na ito ay sharing ni Teh. Tulad ng nabanggit, hindi ganoon kaganap ang pagiging relihiyoso ko, ngunit tuwing sasapit ang Mahal na Araw, masasabi kong fulfilling on my part kapag tumatayo ako ng mga isa hanggang dalawang oras upang abangan ang paradang ito. In a way, masasabi kong isa ito sa mga panata ko every Holy Week (except this year dahil I opted to work). Bukod kasi sa pagtayo ng halos 2 hours, pahirapan din ang pagsakay ng bus pauwi ng probinsya tuwing Mahal na Araw. Minsanang sakripisyo para kay Lord. :)

Hay, nagiging madaldal na naman ako. :(

Vigan Heritage: The Old Road and Pasalubong Corner

Sa Vigan, may nag-iisang kalye roon na never pinasemento ng gobyerno, for the purpose of having the rich culture of Vigan preserved. Ito ay ang Kalye Crisologo, also known as the Heritage (ang weird, pero ganun talaga tawag ng iba). This is a great place to dine and shop for some souvenirs! ^_^

Sa kalye na ito, bawal ang mga auto. Ang puwede lang dumaan ay, mga tao siyempre, at mga Kalesa. Somehow, this is a pollution-free street (kaso airborne ang pollution galing sa mga tambutso ng mga sasakyan na dumadaan sa karatig-kalye kaya damay din X_X). Kung nais magpaka-sosy, sumakay ng kalesa habang tinatahak ang kalyeng ito. Ayun nga lang, mapapamahal ka kung mahina kang tumawad. Nung huling sakay ko ng kalesa, high school pa ako noon. Nasa Php40 ang bayad kapag iikutin lamang ang vicinity ng lagoon sa harap ng Vigan Cathedral. Php100 naman kung mula sa Centro papunta sa baryo namin. Eh noon pa 'yun, anong petsa na? :(

Along this kalye, may mga class restaurant and bar na pupuwedeng pagpartyhan ng mga turista. Ilan sa mga ito ay ang Casa Leona and Max's Fried Chicken (Wow! Bago 'yun ha! XD)

Sa bawat bakasyon, isang bagay ang never makakalimutang gawin ng isang turista - ang mamili ng pasalubong.

Now, for buying pasalubong tips from Teh, read carefully. Sa pagbili ng pasalubong sa Vigan, madalas talo ang mga turistang may katamaran mag-scout kung saan mura ang presyo (well, kahit saang lugar ka naman mag-tour, talo ang gano'n). Simple lang ang tip ko sa inyo - suyurin ang bawat tindahan at magtanong-tanong ng presyo. Kasi para sa isang item, magkakaiba ng dinidiktang presyo ang iba't-ibang tindahan. At dahil time-consuming ang magsulat ng pangalan ng mga tindahang napuntahan mo and their corresponding offer prices for the products that you want, magandang gawin ay kunan ng picture ang mga nakitang souvenir, kasunod agad ng pangalan ng shop na iyong napuntahan. Para kapag inatake ka ng Alzheimer's, may record ka ng mga shop na napagtanungan mo na. A tickler for listing down the prices may come handy, kung mabilis ka namang magsulat. Then browse mo na lang later sa camera mo 'yung mga nakunan mo ng picture. ;)

Teh's tip mentioned earlier is also for the benefit of those who usually find it hard haggling and would prefer walking around. Pero minsan, kahit nakita mo na kung saan ka makakamura, either puwede ka pang tumawad ng mas mababang presyo or kakailanganin mong i-check 'yung quality ng nais mong bilhin.

Si Teh, tuwing gumagala sa kung saang lupalop ng Pilipinas, ay mahilig mamili ng Souvenir Shirt. Halos pinagod ko lahat ng pinsan kong kasama sa aking pasalubong hunting, sa kakahanap ng souvenir shirt na gusto ko sa pinakamababang presyo. Bukod sa mga souvenir shirt, meron ding mga wood-carved accessories na nabibili sa mga shops and kung mahilig ka naman sa mga antiques, marami ring antique shops along the old street. Once namili si Teh ng pocket watch. Pero dahil antigo na nga, hindi na siya umaandar. :(

Teh's Ilocos Hauls: T-shirt, Pocket Watch (R.I.P.) and Abel Blanket

Ang Ilocos ay proud producer din ng various handicrafts - weaved pamaypay, banig, baskets and a lot more. But among these handicrafts, nangingibabaw ang kumot na Abel. Nagre-range ang price ng Abel blanket from Php 150 up to Php 500, depende sa klase at laki ng kumot na bibilhin mo. May dalawang klase kasi ng Abel blanket. Single, or 'yung mas manipis na klase and Double, or 'yung mas makapal na klase ng Abel blanket. Sa totoo lang, mas mura kung sa Vigan Public Market ka na lang bibili ng Abel blanket, around Php 50 to Php 100 less ang price sa public market, dry goods section.

Vigan pasalubong is not only about non-edible goodies. Maaari ka ring magpasalubong ng food, tulad ng Vigan Longganisa (uncooked), and Vigan Bagnet (cooked or uncooked). Again, kung nais makamura, sa public market (wet goods section) mamili ng mga nabanggit. Prices are not fixed, and Teh is not updated kasi tita ko ang namimili ng mga nabanggit, bago kami magbiyahe ng nanay pabalik ng Maynila.

Compared with Pampanga longganisa na matamis ang lasa, hindi matamis ang Vigan longganisa. Nangingibabaw ang pagiging maalat niya kapag kinain. Ang Bagnet naman, literally, is just a Vigan version of Crispy Pata or Lechon Kawali. I don't taste anything distinct when I eat this, but what impresses me about the Bagnet is that, even after a long period of time (within a day, the longest), the crispiness is preserved, compared with the ordinary pata or lechon kawali. A friendly reminder from Teh, eating too much bagnet may lead you to have severe heart problems. Pero, masarap kumain ng bawal. ;)

Kung sweet delicacies naman ang hanap mo, meron namang Vigan suman and bibingka. Hindi na ako updated sa presyo, kasi madalas din, binibilhan kami ng mga kamag-anak namin. Kung hindi naman kamag-anak, mga friendship ng nanay ang nagbibigay. What makes the Vigan bibingka distinct is that most of the time, wala siyang niyog (if buying from Mom's Royal Bibingka). Also, dominant ang lasa ng gatas and 'pag kinain mo siya, semi-liquid ang feeling sa bibig. Gano'n siya kalambot. For Vigan suman naman, well I can't fully say na distinct siya from other suman. Maybe distinct from Antipolo suman, kasi Vigan suman is already sweet by itself, no need for a sugar dip. :) However I find it similar with the taste of Northern Cagayan Valley's Patupat (a triangular-shaped suman).

Outside Cordillera Inn

Aside from the pasalubong stores, some hotels are located along Kalye Crisologo. One of them is Cordillera Inn. Though I'll never get to know the rates, kasi hindi ko na kailangan mag-hotel when I visit Vigan. But based from the reviews I've read, the price is reasonable, considering that its location is quite superb since it is along the Kalye Crisologo.

Dahil walang mabili si Teh, nagposing na lang. O_O

Kung wala namang budget masyado para mamili ng mga souvenirs and delicacies, enjoy rin naman ang magpicture-picture along Kalye Crisologo. Tayo dito, click! Pose doon, click! Camera at posing talent lang ang puhunan. ;)

At kapag naubusan na ng baterya ang digicam, maglakad-lakad at i-feel ang cobble-stoned ground. ^_^

Pagkatapos magliwaliw sa Ilocos Sur at mamili ng mga pasalubong, it's time to go home na... (Awww! :( )
