Pasalubong 101: The Kingdom of Siam

Before we can finally leave this kingdom, samahan muli si Teh sa kanyang pasalubong hunting! ^_^

At bago magpakalango sa pagsha-shopping, be warned first about withdrawing money from ATMs. It is highly recommended to withdraw abroad using BDO ATM card. Sigurado kasing makaka-withdraw ka, unlike BPI which is normally deactivated for international ATM withdrawals. Hassle, kasi ang feedback kay Teh ng BPI before flying to Thailand was that it can be used readily outside the Philippines, which is the same feedback from BDO. 'Yun pala, ang BPI ATM card, kailangan mo pang ipa-activate. Muntik na akong maiyak no'n dahil diyan. Buti na lang, may BDO ATM card ang kasama ni Teh. Kalurks talaga. 

Some of the widely spread ATM machines in Thailand that you can trust are of UOB, Siam Commercial Bank and Krungthai Bank. So never kang mawawalan ng paghuhugutan ng pera (pero ang pera, may chance maubos, huhu!)... ;)

Don't get me wrong mga Teh. Hindi ko ipapasalubong sa inyo ang buong Kaharian ng Thailand. But Thailand, most especially Bangkok, is a shopping wonderland! Branded or cheap apparel, bag, shoes ~ you can find it here! :)

So let's explore shops in Bangkok first. You know mga teh, napakaraming shopping malls sa Bangkok. Pero there are 3 malls which I suggest that you visit, depende sa hanap ninyo. Check this out~~~

Mall: Siam Paragon

What to find here: Internationally famous brands ng damit, sapatos, bag, accessories, perfume and many more! Basta branded! :D

How to get here: When riding the BTS Skytrain, alight at Siam station.

Mall: MBK Mall

What to find here: Fake brand and local Thailand brand apparel, shoes and Thailand souvenirs

By the way, it is also recommended that you check out the I Am Viking store located at the connecting link of the MBK mall and the National Stadium BTS Skytrain station. The store is being managed by a Burmese lady. Buy 10 cute shirts, get 1 free! ^_^

Sa mga adik sa tiangge, Teh highly recommends that you visit Pratunam area in Bangkok. Ang chika eh dito nanggagaling ang supply ng mga bentables sa Divisoria. At marami ring Thailand souvenirs dito na puwedeng ipasalubong sa mga friendships and relatives, as in kahit dito ka na mamili ng lahat ng gusto mong iuwi from Thailand! Kaya galingan ang pagtawad at pamamakyaw. Don't forget to bring your shopping bags and enjoy shopping! ^_^

Sa mga turistang shopping ang main target sa Bangkok, highly recommended din ang pag-lodge within the area, tulad ng ginawa nina Teh. For hotel suggestion, Teh recommends The Richy Place hotel, located in the heart of Pratunam. As in, pagbaba mo pa lang ng hotel, tiangge agad! :D

When you go to the countryside tourist spots of Thailand like those in Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, mostly mga tourist souvenirs and Buddha images ang mabibili mo roon. Pero napansin ko lang, mas mura ang mga souvenirs sa probinsya. Lalo na sa Ayutthaya. Napansin ko kasi noong nakapila sina Teh sa mala-box office na toilet ng Wat Mahathat, nasa THB 90 lang ang 10 pieces na golden elephant keychains (na may secret pocket, hehehe)! Well, in Pratunam, the set is more expensive by THB 10 but in most areas of Bangkok, it ranges from around THB 150 to THB 180. Mga ganyan ang price difference. So it is highly recommended that you buy souvenirs sa provinces like Ayutthaya and Sukhothai. Oh and one more thing. You might be interested in bringing home a local Thailand sepak rattan ball. ;)

Buddhist statues everywhere. Buy na mga teh! :)

Since you are visiting the center of Buddhism, hindi naman siguro masama kung mag-uwi ka ng maski isang Buddha image. If you want to take home bronze Buddha images, bili na you sa Buranathai Buddha Foundry in Phitsanulok! Suggestion ni Teh kapag bibili ka rito ng Buddha image, know beforehand kung anong araw ka ipinanganak sa mundong ito. Like for Teh, I was born on a Wednesday. And so, Buranathai staff suggested that I should buy the Buddha image holding a bowl. 'Yun daw kasi 'yung lucky Buddha image for Teh. So don't be shy! Tell them your day of birth and you will get to know your lucky Buddha image... which reminds me of Angel Uriel during Teh's Bohol souvenir hunting... ;)

For a bronze Buddha or other Buddhist statue, Teh would say na mura dito. And to think na real gold ang plating nito, sulit na siya mga teh. Prices range from THB 150 to THB 1500 (or higher), depende sa size ng iyong bibilhin. For pocket bronze statues, you can get them at THB 30 to THB 50. Haggling is accepted naman, so tawad-tawad din. :)

Aside from the bronze statues in Buranathai, at every temple, you can find Buddhist statues made of other material like resin and wood. And aside from the Buddhist figures, the beautiful Thailand elephant gold keyrings are highly recommended as pasalubong. Task para sa pasasalubungan ng keyring ~ hanapin ang secret pocket! ^_^

By the way, Teh came across the VAT Refund form at Suvarnabhumi Airport. If you plan to shop at malls that issue receipts, don't forget to fill up the VAT Refund form and show this to any shop you'll be shopping at.

Actually, mas recommended ni Teh ang pagkain as pasalubong. I don't know why, pero kasi feeling ni Teh, mas na-appreciate 'to ng mga napapasalubungan ko. Sadya lang bang mahilig kumain ang mga tao sa universe ko? :)) Highly recommended ang pag-uuwi ng Spicy Tamarind. Buti na lang talaga at may tour guide si Teh, kung hindi, wala akong maiuuwing ganito sa aking universe. Una sa lahat, hindi ako nakakabasa ng Thai. >.<

And there is this one souvenir hunting tip na gusto kong i-share sa inyo mga teh. Buy in Thailand (or kahit saan ka man mapadpad) what you cannot buy here in the Philippines. Tulad na lang ng mapang binili ni Teh sa Kanchanaburi. Well meron din namang Thailand map dito sa atin, kaso ang pricey. (Arteh?...) Besides, for me, maganda ang mapang nabili ko dahil meron siyang tourist attractions indicator all over Thailand. Teh bought the map for THB 40, though sinubukan kong tawaran, eh kaso wala talagang patawad... Pero ok na rin, at least favorable ang souvenir na ito for Teh's collection. :)

Alam kong nakahuhumaling mag-shopping sa Thailand. Pero don't forget mga teh na naka-abang ang mga teh at kuyang taga-Customs sa arrival. Kung mukha na kayong magtatayo ng tiangge stall sa Divi eh baka maharang at ma-tax-san ang mga na-shopping ninyo. (Gulo/laslas itey kung sakali!) At 'wag din kalimutan ang baggage allowance na naka-allot sa return flight niyo para hindi mapaiyak sa biglaang gastos! ;)

Pasalubong 101 ~ Beijing, China

At siyempre pa, bawal umuwi nang walang pasalubong! Samahan si Teh sa kanyang pasalubong hunting in Beijing. >Tenenenenen...<

Kung meron akong isang bagay na pinagsisisihan sa pagpunta ko ng Forbidden City, iyon ay ang hindi ko pagbili rito ng Chinese doll na gusto ko sanang gawing palamuti o paperweight sa aking work area sa bahay. Dito ko kasi nakita ang doll na gusto ni Teh sa murang halaga. Hindi ko binili, sa pag-iisip na unang lugar pa lang naman iyon na napuntahan namin at baka mas mura at mas maganda pa ang design sa iba. Kaso lang, sa airport ko na talaga nakita 'yung kawangis ng doll na gusto ko. Ayan tuloy, napamahal lalo si Teh. :( Gusto ko kasi 'yung doll na may gitara. Wala lang, bet lang ni Teh. Hahaha. K.

Anyway, good quality Chinese dolls range from RMB 80 to RMB 120 (plus RMB 40 na 'pag sa airport ka bibili), depende sa height na gusto mo. I'm not sure if the posted price is final, pero most likely 'pag may tag price, wala nang discount. But then, there's no harm in trying, so still, subukan niyong tawaran, lalo na kung may iba pa kayong bibilhin... :)

From jade bangles to Buddha Beads. From austerity figures to Chinese dolls. From chopsticks to funny purses. Ang mga ito ay ilan lamang sa mga souvenirs na available sa bawat tourist attraction na iyong mata-tumbling-an. :)

Oh, and when bargaining, ask "cheaper, cheaper?". Nakakatawa para sa ating marurunong at nakakaunawa ng English talaga, pero kasi 'yan ang naiintindihan nilang pagtawad ng customer. Hehehe...

Some insider tip from Teh. Always, as in lagi. Kapag tatawad kayo, start with slashing the asking price by 70%. Yep, as in for example, 'pag nagtanong ka kung magkano ang, let's say, cap, at sinabi sa 'yong RMB 100 ang price. Tawaran mo ng RMB 30. May ibang bibigay, may ibang magagalit sa barat mo. If you really want it, go until RMB 50, which is 50%. Ngayon, if you don't get it at 50% off, and you feel na hindi worth it kung maliit ang discount or keri mo pang maghanap sa iba, Teh strongly recommends that you let it go.

Well, it really depends on you. Tantiyahin mo rin kung sa tingin mo, magkano talaga ang value ng bibilhin mo. If you feel na masyadong mahal at ayaw kang patawarin, then walk-out. Sa pagwo-walk-out mo naman, dalawa ulit ang pupuwedeng mangyari. Either ibigay na sa 'yo ang tawad or nganga. Kung ibigay sa 'yo ang tawad, then gorabels na! :))

May pagkakataon ding wala maski RMB 1 na tawad ang ibibigay sa 'yo ng tindera. Kapag gano'n, again Teh recommends that you let it go. Bakit? Kasi ang mga Chinese ay may tendency na mag-overprice ng mga paninda, lalo na sa mga foreigners. Tulad na lang ng isang souvenir shop sa Temple of Heaven, nganga ang ibinigay na tawad para sa keychains kaya hindi bumili rito si Teh no'n. As in K, thanks, bye ang naging drama ni Teh.

Pero siyempre, kung wala ka nang choice at kailangan mo nang bumili talaga sa lugar na iyon due to some valid reasons, then gorabels pa rin. Tulad nung cap na kailangan ko talaga that time kasi naiwanan ko payong ko at natawaran ko naman kaya kinuha ko na rin. :D

Kung non-edible souvenir items, Teh highly recommends Suzhou Street shops in Summer Palace. Cheap prices pero easy to haggle with the sellers. :)

Although may iba ring hindi nagpatawad talaga, tulad na lang ni Chinese Bamboo Flute Shifu[1]. The cheapest wind instrument na tinda niya ay nasa RMB 120. Anyway, it's okay kasi  I believe in a right of an artist naman at may free music lesson siyang kasama. Sabi niya kay Teh, "I can teach you how to use that (the cheapest wind instrument) in 1 minute!" At totoo nga! Naturuan niya si Teh in just 1 minute! Xie xie, Shifu... ^_^

At ang pangalawang hindi nagpatawad kay Teh ay ang wooden charm engraver na itey. Bought a charm for RMB 20. Wish ko lang may kasamang mabuting dasal ang pagta-tattoo niya sa binili ni Teh na charm... :)) Well I am not a 100% Chinese, but Teh believes in the Legend of the Invisible Red Thread... ^_^

For edible stuffs tulad ng Champoy, Rice Crackers, etc., I think you will get a decent price naman sa mga supermarkets. Like in our case, sa supermarket ng Glory Mall kami namili. One thing na hindi makakalimutan ni Teh sa pamimili niya sa supermarket ay ang 3-pack Lays in can na makikita ninyo sa picture. Sa pinilahan kasi naming counter, may nakasunod kaming isang senior citizen na may discount card for selected items, tulad ng 3-pack Lays in can. Habang nilalagay sa plastic ang mga napamili niya, pinagamit niya sa counter ang card. Sa dami ng in-explain ng taga-counter, walang naintindihan si Teh, pero umoo na lang din ako para matapos na. Pagka-scan sa item, napansin kong bumaba ang presyo. At saka ko naintindihang discount card pala ang pinagamit sa amin ng matanda. Kaya napa-super xie xie kami ni Little Pig sa kanya. Not really sure kung nakinabang siya pero siya ang pinakamabait na Chinese na na-encounter nina Teh. :)

By the way, kung katulad ni Teh, mahilig kayo sa mapa, these old map paintings are highly recommended for you! Sometimes, helpful din sila when you visit a certain place kasi may mga lugar na hawig pa rin sa old map ang itsura. Get a copy for RMB 10 or less (if you buy more)! ^_^

Though shopping in Beijing can get cheap, depending on your haggling skills, 'wag kalilimutan ang baggage limit! :)

Pasalubong 101 ~ Santa Ana, Cagayan Valley

Halos uwian time na naman. Pero bago 'yan, mag-canvass at mamili muna tayo ng pasalubong ni Teh!...

As a tourist attraction, hindi pa fully developed ang Santa Ana, compared with more competitive tourist spots sa Northern Luzon tulad ng Pagudpud sa Ilocos Norte at Callao Cave on the outskirts of Tuguegarao City kung kaya't hindi gaanong distinct with respect to other seaside-based tourist spots or specific to Santa Ana ang mabibiling pasalubong. But anyway, I can assure you na may maiuuwi tayong sariwa mula rito. :)

~ Pasalubong # 1: Crabs ~

Price: Php 300 per kilo ('pag galing Isabela)

Where to buy: Contact PASAMOBA's President through Miss Jo

Matapos naming makapag-settle ng mga gamit sa aming room, bumaba ako saglit upang maglibot sa dagat. Bago ako nakapaglakad sa dagat, sa baba naabutan kong nagchichikahan ang president ng PASAMOBA, na isang cooperative ng mga boat tour guides sa Palaui Island, at si Miss Jo. It so happened na may dala siyang isang banyera ng crabs. Ayun, bumili ako ng pambaon naming pananghalian para sa island hopping. Medyo mataas ang benta sa amin dahil sa Isabela pala galing 'yung crabs, kaya konti lang ang binili ko...

Bili na kayo! ^_^

Pero don't worry, may mga home-bred crabs ang Santa Ana. Sa Palaui Island kasi, maraming nahuhuling crabs ang mga locals. Might be cheaper than Php 300 per kilo na tinda ni Teh President. But still, the crabs from Isabela are huge and delicious! :)

~ Pasalubong # 2: Bato Fish~

Price: Php 50 per kilo

+ Php 170 for the Styro container

Where to buy: Just text Kuya Danilo or Kuya Rodel

Ang laman ng styro ni Teh...

Nakahuhumaling ang alok nina Kuya Danilo at Kuya Rodel na ibili kami ng Php 50 per kilong isda galing sa Bato Island. Sobrang mura dahil straight from the fisherman binili nina Kuya. Kahit pa may additional charge para sa styro container. Hindi kasi ako prepared sa fact na makakapag-uwi pala ako ng ganito. 

Rainbow fish? Parrot fish? Ah, basta. Sariwa ito! :)_

Sulit naman, kahit pa bumili ako ng styro container dahil napakasarap ng isdang ito. Kalasa niya ang Lapu-lapu, na saksakan ng mahal dito sa Maynila. Keri naman ibiyahe dahil marami kaming nilagay na yelo. 'Yun nga lang, mabigat ito dalhin. Magba-bus pa man din ako pabalik. >_< Pero minsan lang ang ganitong pagkakataong makabili ng mura na, super fresh pa, kaya gora lang si Teh. :)

Kinilaw, sinigang, prito, sarsiado at kung ano pang maisip mong luto sa isda, puwedeng-puwedeng i-try sa Bato Fish! ^_^

~ Pasalubong # 3: Handicrafts made of Seashells ~

Price Range: Php 10 to Php 300, depende sa bibilhin mo ^_^

Napadaan na rin lang kami sa Jerolinda Resort, namili na rin sina Teh ng souvenir nila galing Santa Ana. Dahil dagat ang number 1 feasible source of income dito, expect to find handicrafts na gawa sa mga materials galing sa sea. At 'pag dagat, siguradong seashells ang unang papasok sa isip mo. Unforgettable experience ang pagbili ko rito dahil dito ako super nagmadaling mamili ng pasalubong. Paparating na kasi ang makulimlim na ulap kung saan kami namimili at nakikipagtawaran. Tumulong din kaming magligpit dito. Hehe... :D

Kung may nakalimutang bilhin sa Jerolinda Resort, worry not! Dahil marami ring seashell souvenirs dito sa Costa Carina. :)

~ Salt and Vinegar Shops Along the Highway~

Located at: Pasuquin

Visited on: Day 2 - afternoon

Along the way, makakakita ng mga tindahang katulad nito. Noong una, ang plano talaga namin ay dumaan sa salt refinery, only to find out na along the highway din ang mga refinery na ito. Konting pahapyaw lang sa salt processing, heto ang steps kung paanong nagiging asin ang tubig-dagat.

Una, magsalok ng tubig-dagat. Then lutuin. 'Pag nanunuyo na ang luto, ibilad sa araw. Then pak! I-pack na ang namuong mga asin. Sa halagang Php 50, makabibili ng isang pack ng asing may timbang na approximately 3 hanggang 4 na kilo. Very cheap, 'di ba? ;)

Buy na, mga Teh! Authentic Ilokano suka, Basi wine and very cheap salt pack! :)

At depende rin sa size, makabibili rin ng sukang Iloko made of sugar cane at Basi, which is an Ilocano-original wine. Also made from sugar cane... :)

~ Biscocho Bakery ~

Located at: Pasuquin

Salamat sa isa pang pamangkin ni Kuya Ruben na nakasakay namin mula sa bungad ng Pasuquin, natagpuan namin ang sikat na Biscocho Bakery na ito. Only in Pasuquin. :)

Sorry, hindi kami puwede sa loob, for the obvious reason na top secret ang biscocho recipe. Well, basta ang nalaman lang ni Teh, ang biscocho ay gawa sa pinatigas na tinapay. Kung anong klase ng tinapay, seeeeecreeeeet! ;)

Medyo may pagsisisi ako sa shop na ito dahil hindi ako nakabili ng t-shirt ni Macoy. :( Next time talaga na madaan ako ng Batac, talagang gora na me sa pagbili ng t-shirt... (Kailan pa kaya 'yun?) :)

~ La Elliana Hotel's Pasalubong Corner ~

Located at: Laoag City

Non-edible: Handwoven Inabel products.
Edible/Consumable: Common Ilocos Delicacies like Chichacorn,
Sukang Iloko, Bagoong, Basi and Tabako.

Hind ako nabili rito dahil ang pananaw ko lagi, mas mahal ang mabibiling pasalubong sa hotel. Pero malay natin mura naman dito dahil mura rin naman ang mga pagkain sa restaurant nila. And kung tinatamad kang mamalengke, okay na ring mamili ka rito. :)

~ Laoag City Public Market ~

Located at: Laoag City

Visited on: Day 4 - morning

Bagnet kayo ading! Manang! :)

Payong malupit mga teh, 'wag na 'wag aalis ng Ilocos provinces nang walang naiuuwing Bagnet o Longganisa. Siguro sa dami ng pasalubong shop na napuntahan namin dito sa Ilocos Norte, kahit sa Sur, tanging sa palengke lang kami lagi nakakakita ng mga ito. Well, sa Vigan, may mga bahay-bahay doon na may puwesto sa labas at nagtitinda ng Longganisa o Bagnet. Pero siyempre, 'yung mga gano'n ay kakilala lang ng kakilala namin. Referral, kumbaga. Eh siyempre, sa Norte, wala naman kaming kakilala gaano, kaya dumiretso kami ni Ma sa tiendaan[1]. Just one tricycle away from the hotel. :)

Umakyat lang sa 3rd floor ng market, sa wet goods section para makapamili ng Longanissa at Bagnet. As of June 2012, ang presyuhan ng Bagnet ay nasa Php 400 per kilo habang Php 220 naman sa Longganisa. Pero of course, puwedeng mag-request ng konting discount... ;)

At isang bagay pa na maganda sa tiendaan ay nandiyan din lahat ng mga non-edible Ilocano products, tulad ng souvenir shirts ng Ilocos Norte at Inabel handwoven products. Hanapin ang stall ng Conching's Dry Goods sa 2nd floor dry goods (duh?) section ng market.

Also as of June 2012, narito ang presyo ng mga non-edible Ilocano products ni Aling Conching (well 'di ko sure kung siya talaga si Aling Conching, assuming lang ako kasi 'yun pangalan ng stall niya):

• Php 150 ~ Colored Souvenir Shirt (mas mura ang white shirt)
• Php 150 ~ Single Inabel Blanket (mas manipis kaysa sa double, halleur?)
• Php 180 ~ Double Inabel Blanket
• Php 280 per 5 meters ~ Telang Inabel (kung bet mong manahi using this)
• Php 15 ~ Inabel Bimpo (ideal na isabit sa refrigerator o kusina)
• Php 150 ~ Inabel Sarong/Balabal (pambalabal ni Teh sa lamig ng opis...)

~ Sarusar Ilocano Products Exhibit ~

Located at: Museo Ilocos Norte, Laoag City

Visited on: Day 4 - morning

Break muna tayo sa katitingin ng mga mabibiling pasalubong. Konting background lang ng ibig sabihin ng Sarusar. Sarusar is a deep Ilokano term na ang ibig sabihin ay "sirok ti balay" o sa tagalog ay "ilalim ng bahay. Medyo nalabuan ako noong una kasi nasa ground floor naman ito ng museo at wala sa basement. Sa mga Ilokano kasi, kadalasan, ang mismong bahay kung nasaan ang living room, dining area, kitchen, bedroom at iba pang common parts ng bahay ay makikita sa 2nd floor, tulad ng bahay sa loob ng museo. And 'yan din ang reason kung bakit natawag na Sarusar ang pasalubong store na ito. :)

Pili lang kayo habang nagkukuwento si Teh. :)

Personally, para sa mga on tight budget tulad ni Teh, I do not recommend this place much for pasalubong hunting. Pero kapag wala kang chance na ma-explore ang buong Norte para makapagsuyod ng mga souvenir, time-saving and cost-effective kung dito ka na lang bibili. Maganda example ay ang Bangui Windmills display figure. Kung hindi kaya ng time mo during your stay in Ilocos Norte ang magpunta pa sa Bangui or Burgos, dito na lang mamili ng nabanggit na display figure... :)

Okay rin bumili rito kung halimbawang may nakalimutan kang bilhin sa isa sa mga lugar na napuntahan mo sa Norte. Kung maaalala ninyo, nabanggit ko kaninang nagsisi ako sa hindi ko pagbili ng Marcos t-shirt sa Batac. Nagtanong ako rito kung meron sila, kaso wala kaya nganga. :O
