Palaui and Beyond ~ Unveiling the Hidden Paradise

Are you ready to see the hidden paradise of Santa Ana? Hindi na patatagalin pa ni Teh, Palaui Island and Boracay of the North... Here we come! ^_^

Habang mababa pa ang mga ulap, sinundo kami nina Kuya Danilo at Kuya Rodel, ang aming tour guides and boat operators for this mighty adventure! Mighty dahil siguradong exciting, though expectedly excruciating ang araw na ito... :D

Almost there! :D

So mga 8:00 AM, umalis kami ng Costa Carina at naglayag papuntang Palaui Island. Mula sa aming tinutuluyan, which is nasa Centro, inabot kami ng mga 20 minutes bago namin nakatabi ang islang ito.

Nakakaaliw, dahil maraming formation ang island na ito na medyo kakaiba (at minsan, kakatakot na rin), tulad nitong tipak ng batong muhkang pinagpatung-patong na bungo ng mga tao... >_<

Uso rin ang mga ganitong mala-cave na canals or openings all throughout Palaui Island... Kung swimmer ka, try mong languyin mula sa bangka. Goodluck na lang kung may way kang makabalik sa bangka.

At dahil maaga-aga rin nang kami ay pumalaot, naabutan namin ang mga mangingisdang ito sa gitna ng dagat na nag-aantay patiently sa mga mahuhuling isda. Sabi nina kuya, matagal ang pagnganga pero worth it naman pag-angat ng kanilang mga net dahil siguradong ga-tonelada ang kanilang maibabalik sa pampang. Gano'n kasagana ang isda rito! ^_^ Hopefully, walang magtatangkang mag-illegal fishing dito...

~ Stopover # 1: Siwangag Cove ~

Tinanong kami nina kuya kung gusto ba naming huminto rito saglit. Nagulat sila nang ako ay tumango dahil bibihira lang daw ang humihinto rito. Well, alam niyo naman si Teh, basta puwedeng puntahan, pupuntahan. Hehe...

At pagdating namin doon, sinalubong kami ng mga cute na hermit crabs na ito. Sa sobrang tuwa namin, hinakot namin sila agad. Wala pang 5 seconds, nakagat na kami sa kamay. X_X

Worth it naman ang paghinto namin rito dahil unang-una, walang tao roon nang mga oras na 'yun kundi 'yung team namin at kitang-kita ang halos magkasalubong na mga bahagi ng isla mula sa hindi kalayuan... Ngayon ko lang naintindihan ang ibig sabihin ng cove... ^_^

Kaya pala siya naging cove...

Kung napansin ninyo, may dalawang linya ng wooden poles mula pampang patungong gitna ng dagat. Dati raw itong pantalan, sabi nina kuya. Siguro way back Spanish regime pa ito ginawa. Hindi na nga lang na-maintain. Anyway, muhkang wala namang nakatira rito kundi  mga campers.

~ Stopover # 2: Trail to Cape Engaño Lighthouse ~

Alam kong mapapagod kami rito kung kaya't hinanda ko ang aking sarili sa trekking... Sa tabing-dagat pa lang, papunta sa paanan ng trail, challenging na dahil sa gabundok na mga corals at shells na nagla-landslide sa bawat yapak ni Teh.

A fruit that can dress humanity. (Chot!)

Anyway, habang naglalakad, this fruit na hindi pala fruit (okay, eh 'di bunga ng puno) caught Teh's attention. Sabi nina kuya, hindi raw nakakain ito pero nagagamit ang bungang ito para sa paghabi ng special na klase ng tela, na hindi ko maalala kung ano. (Hay, memory gap...)

Pagdating sa paanan ng inakyat naming bundok papanhik ng Cape Engaño Lighthouse, lumuwag ang aking paghinga dahil nakakita ako ng sementadong hagdan. Kaso pagdating ng kalagitnaan, nawala ang hagdan. Literal na hiking na ang kasunod. Lupang maputik ang aakyatin. Kakaulan lang kasi the night before kami pumanhik sa parola.

Pero ayos lang. Kasi konting akyat mo pa lang, mapapanganga ka na sa view na makikita mo pagtalikod... TAH~DAH!!! White sand beach and clear blue sea... ^_^

Finally, after the excruciating hiking at pag-harness ng putik gamit ang aming mga tsinelas, dizizit! Narating din namin ang lighthouse. Muhkang abandoned, pero maniniwala ba kayong aktibo pa ang parolang ito? 'Yan ay ayon sa The Lighthouse Directory ni Russ Rowlett, though obvious na may mga sira na ang parola.

Sa itaas, matatanaw mo ang Camiguin Island (hindi 'yung nasa Mindanao, ha) na nasa bandang Northwest.

Tanaw din dito ang karatig-isla ng Palaui Island, na tatawagin kong Teh Island dahil 'di ko alam kung may pangalan na siya. Malay natin wala pa, hehehe.

Worth it ang pagod at naipong putik sa paa sa pag-akyat mo rito dahil sa breathtaking views na makikita rito sa itaas. Masarap ding mag-inhale exhale dito ng sariwang hangin... ^_^

In terms of marine navigation, kung ang Cape Bojeador ang Northwestern-most point ng Luzon, ang Cape Engaño naman ang Northeastern-most point.

~ Stopover # 3: A Slice of Leonardo's Trail ~

Not so far away from the Cape Engaño Trail is the Leonardo's Trail. Isang unforgettable experience para kay Teh. Nag-alok kasi si Kuya Rodel na puntahan namin saglit ang falls dito.

Akala ni Teh, nalaglag na bag. :)) @_@

Following the trail to the hidden falls ay nakita kaming kakaiba at rare na insect/animal na muhkang jellyfish. Sabi ni Kuya Rodel, once in a blue moon lang sila kung matagpuan sa Palaui Island. So consider yourself lucky kung nakadaupang palad mo ang land jellyfish na ito. :)

Sabi ni Kuya Rodel, malapit lang naman ang falls dahil may short cut. Kaso, sa kakahanap namin ng short cut, naligaw ata kami. Matagal-tagal na rin kasing hindi nag-guide si kuya. Gayunpaman, kahit na tadtad na ng galos ang paa ni Teh dahil sa paghahanap namin ng hard-to-find waterfalls, super nag-enjoy ako dahil finally, naka-experience ako ng totoong nature tripping. Na tipong kakalas ka pa ng mga tangkay ng punong nakasagabal sa daraanan mo, may madaanan lang, at malulubog ang paa mo sa mga hindi pa naman kalakihang water streams from time to time.

At sa wakas! Matapos ang forest maze challenge, natagpuan na rin namin ang waterfalls na ito. Infairness, pinahirapan nito ng husto si Teh! Hehe...

Nakakatawa lang noong pabalik na kami sa tabing-dagat dahil diri-diretso lang ang nilakad namin pabalik. Wala pa atang 5 minutes, nakabalik na kami. So totoo palang may short cut. Hehe...

~ Passing by Dos Hermanos Islands  ~

Hindi lang pala sa Pagudpud merong pair ng islang tinatawag na Dos Hermanos. Meron din ang Santa Ana niyan! The difference is that, mas hard to reach dahil nasa bandang gitna sila, hindi katulad ng nasa Pagudpud. And based on my visual impression, mas malawak ang gap ng matatagpuan malapit sa Palaui Island.

~ Stopover # 4: Anguib-Gotan Shoreline ~

Tunay ngang may natatagong ganda ang shoreline na ito dahil napalilibutan ito ng mga limestones, which reminds me of Palawan.

As usual, fail na naman ang search for balinsasayaw. :O

Nabanggit nina kuya na nag-e-exist din ang balinsasayaw sa mga limestones na ito. Dahil diyan, Teh therefore concludes that, "where the limestones are, the balinsasayaws are". :D Well, pareho rin ang center of interest ng mga locals dito sa mga balinsasayaw ~ ang laway nilang nagsisilbing main ingredient sa isa sa mga pinakamahal na soup sa mundo, ang Nido Oriental Soup. (Yuck, but true.)

Bukod sa mga limestones, maituturing din itong gamblers' haven. May casino kasi dito sa Gotan Beach si Pareng Ponce, mainly dedicated din sa mga Chinese gamblers tulad ng Sun City, whihSalon International. Truly, Santa Ana is the Macau of Northern Philippines...

Sakto namang magla-lunch time na nang nakarating kami sa Anguib Beach. Sa halagang Php 20, maaaring huminto saglit dito upang mag-swimming at mag-lunch. Well, sa totoo lang, may hiwalay na bayad pa ang pagre-rent ng cottages dito. So if you desperately need to stay here, maghanda ng at least Php 300 for the cottage rental fee. Tip lang mga teh, tawaran ang initial price ng cottage rental fee. Php 300 will be the most decent price to enjoy the serenity of this place. ^_^

Behind the trees is Nangaramoan... No peeking!

Kuwento rin sa amin nina kuya, noon, abot-kamay pa ang pagpunta sa Nangaramoan Beach. Ngunit dahil naging private property ito ng PR Bank (thank you X_X), nagkaroon ng entrance fee ang pagpunta roon. It is the best part of the shoreline but because the entrance fee is an overwhelming Php 500, nganga. We did not push through na rin dahil sa limited time na meron kami. :O

Masaya si Teh na na-experience niyang pagmasdan ang Boracay of the North... Natuklasan ko na rin sa wakas ang kagandahan nito, after so many times of attempting to see Anguib beach... :)

~ Stopover # 5: The Mangroves ~

Akala n'yo sa Palawan lang meron nito? Dito rin sa Santa Ana, meron niyan! Where the limestones are, the mangroves are... Observation lang din ni Teh. Actually, ito ay bonus o giveaway nina Kuya Danilo at Kuya Rodel dahil sila ang nag-offer kung gusto ba naming makita ang mga mangroves. Definitely we answered yes!... Good thing here, hindi na kinailangang patayin ang makina ng bangka dahil medyo high tide na noong napadaan kami rito. Thanks sa bonus, mga kuya! ^_^

~ Stopover # 6: Rona/Manidad Island a.k.a. the Crocodile ~

Marahil ito ang paboritong stopover ni Teh dahil sa pagiging kakaiba ng islang ito. Kakaiba dahil may natatanging feature ang rock mass ng islang ito. Nakalulungkot kung tutuusin, na sa bawat yapak mo sa rock mass na ito, nasisira siya unti-unti dahil pagpagin mo lang ito, natatapyasan ito ng mga bato. Siguro, isang suntok lang ng karate black belter, masisira ang buong crocodile formation. Gano'n ito ka-fragile... :(

Teh: Huh? Pa'no na naman ako aakyat??? @_@

Challenge na naman ang pag-akyat ko rito dahil walang stairs paakyat sa ibabaw. Mabuti na lang at tinulungan ako nina kuyang makapanhik dito.

Kung hindi ako nag-effort sa pag-akyat, siguro ay hindi ko makikita ang magandang view sa itaas. Parang diving/suicide spot lang ang dulo nito. Hehe... Suicide kasi mababaw lang ang dagat sa bahaging ito.

Medyo naawa ako nang marinig ko mula kina kuya na dati, ang gap na ito ay napakanipis lamang na hindi kakasya ang tao rito. Pero dahil sa kiskis-bakbak-tapyas feature ng islang ito, unti-unting lumawak ang space sa pagitan ng dalawang rock mass na ito. Naputol tuloy ang nguso ng crocodile... :(

Tip lang mga teh. Itaon ang pagpunta rito nang low tide para makapag-snorkel sa hindi kalayuan. Dahil high tide na noong nagpunta kami, nawindang lang si Teh habang nagi-snorkel. Wala pang 5 minutes, umahon na kami ni Kuya Danilo pabalik ng bangka. In short, nganga. :O

~ Stopover # 7: Jerolinda Resort in Mapurao Island~

Entrance Fee: Php 50 (as of July 2012)

It's almost 4:30 in the afternoon and now we are down to our final stop...

Somehow reminded me of Dive Link Resort, na 5 minutes away from the mainland din by boat. At isa pang bagay na parehas sa kanila ay ang pagkakaroon ng mahabang pier na nagsisilbing gateway ng mga turista patungo sa kanilang resort.

Cozy cottage for rent!

But the difference is that, you are stepping on white beach island dito sa Jerolinda. At isa pa, mas ramdam mo ang dagat dahil pupuwedeng mag-swimming sa dagat dito, at may mga cottages din na maaaring rentahan.

Sa pagbisita rito, hindi mo dapat makalimutang dalawin ang pinakamalaking lobster dito sa Santa Ana. 'Yun nga lang, sa kasamaang palad, isa lang siyang statue. Akala pa man din ni Teh, edible ang giant lobster na ito. Hehe...

Supposedly, dito kami matutulog. Kaya lang, dahil closed ang resort nang kami ay dumating ng Santa Ana, we stayed somewhere in Centro instead. During peak season, lodging price for a single room may actually go down, for as low as Php 800 per night. Pero 'pag kakaunti ang guests, you will need to pay Php 1400 to cover the generator expenses.

Rooms for rent!

Sa totoo lang, marami pang magandang puntahan within the vicinity of Palaui and Anguib Beach. Due to our limited time, energy, and funds, hindi na namin napuntahan ang Nangaramoan Beach (Entrance fee: Php 500, ayon kina kuya because it is owned by PR Bank) and Punta Verde (dahil na-low batt kami sa paghahanap 'nung waterfalls sa Leonardo trail). Will consider exploring them when I return here... ;)

At hindi lang 'yan, we also missed out the camping experience. Kuya Danilo and Kuya Rodel offer camping activities on any Palaui Island spot you'd like to camp on! Ahm, magre-review muna ako ng mga natutunan ko sa GSP. Hehe! Maybe next time... ^_^

Dahil sa mga bagay na ito, tinitiyak kong darating ang araw na lalago ang turismo rito. Napakaganda ng Palaui Island at ng mga white-sand beaches rito. Very tranquil and clean. Sana ma-maintain ito ng mga local residents ng Santa Ana at San Vicente...

Malungkot man, ngunit I have to say goodbye na to this paradise... ;_(

♫ At the Costa~♫, Costa Carina~♫

If you're on a tight budget and would like to spend a night at least in a clean, comfortable room, maraming ibang lodging options sa Santa Ana na tiyak sasakto sa budget ninyo. But actually, I still cannot say na mura ang lodging sa Santa Ana because nagre-range ang room rates (good for 1 to 2 persons, puwedeng 3 kung sexy kayong lahat) between Php 1400 to Php 2000 on a low season. For more than 2 pax, around Php 2200 and up ang usual rates ng budget rooms. Medyo may kamahalan compared sa Tuguegarao City. So I would suggest na maghanda ng at least Php 2000 for an overnight lodging, especially if you're on your own. But, kung cowboy kayo at keri naman ninyo matulog sa cottages, definitely it would be cheaper. :)

It was almost sunset when we arrived at nakita naming abot-tanaw lang ang dagat mula sa labas ng aming room kung kaya't nawala ang pagod namin mula sa long and excruciating trip. Dahil diyan, hindi nakapagpigil 'yung pananabik ko sa simoy ng hanging-dagat kaya dali-dali akong bumaba at naglakad papunta roon.  So right after leaving our things sa room, I went down to greet the sea. ^_^

Hindi ko natanaw ang mismong paglubog ng araw, though I was facing the West from where I stood, dahil sa kapal ng mga ulap. Nagbabadya na mamayang pagsapit ng dilim, bubuhos ang malakas na ulan... :(

Sa halagang Php 1600 per night (1-2pax, or 3-sexy pax), you will have a clean room, clean bathroom (cold shower only), and a magnificent view while dining on the table outside your room... :)

Aside from the budget rooms, marami pang amenities ang resort na ito. They have cottages, videoke machine for rent and shared bathrooms para sa mga day tourists ng resort, function room for rent, and a tranquil bar in front of the reception desk (no noisy bands, just chat with the resort staff and Miss Jo if in need of company). :) Well, sabi ni Miss Jo, coming soon pa ang restaurant nila dahil ginagawa pa ito and she is still formulating the menu for it. But for now, they can offer breakfasts like tocilog and hotsilog and paluto, basta meron kang main ingredients. Like in our case, nagpaluto kami ng crabs (featured in the food trip post) na nabili namin mula sa friend ni Miss Jo na President ng PASAMOBA Cooperative. (Sorry, I forgot her name... >_<)

Sun City ~ The Elegant Rendezvous

Ang inyong lingkod ay muling nagbabalik para sa isa na namang chapter ng adventures (and misadventures) ni Teh sa Santa Ana, Cagayan Valley!...

Last year, for Teh's Christmas getaway which was few months after the board exam, I was scouting for a good place to unwind. And since laging nauudlot ang pagpunta ko sa Santa Ana tuwing nagbabakasyon ako sa Ballesteros, I decided to pay this place a visit. At isa sa mga nakita ni Teh, salamat sa tourism page ng Santa Ana, ay ang resort na ito ~ ang Cagayan Holiday and Leisure Resort, also known as the Sun City. They've got a majestic aura of the lobby, the restaurants, the infinity pool, and corridors inside each building. Bawat sulok, siguradong mapapanganga ka sa ganda at linis... :)

The main highlight of this resort is the casino. Waley kaming naiuwing picture dahil bawal ang picture-taking sa loob ng casino. Kaya bago na lang kami pumasok nag-picture. At dahil nakatsinelas lang kaming pumasok dito, pinahiram kami ng guards ng Crocs na slippers. (Sowwwsyahl.) If you will stay in one of their villas, you will be entitled to complementary casino vouchers. For Grand Villa lodgers, they are entitled to Php 400 worth of casino voucher per night, per villa. Mabuti na lang at hindi sugarol sina Teh, kung kaya't pagkatapos naming magamit ang Php 400 coupons, bumatsi na kami at ipinangkain ang pera mula sa napanalunang chips. :D By the way, the complementary coupons are only playable sa Baccarat tables.

And since malayo ang casino building from our villa, we were serviced by this electric car everytime na pupunta kami sa casino area. Well, hindi para magsugal, kundi para kumain. (Defensive much?) Parang Shangri-la ang peg! :)

Kung hindi mahilig magsugal tulad ni Teh, worry not dahil maraming amenities ang resort na ito. Free use of the infinity pool and for a certain fee, they offer spa, gym or watersports activities services, depende sa trip mo. (Inquire here for more info on their updated rates...) Not sure for the use of billiards if it's free, though.

May konting misadventure lang si Teh sa pagje-jetski niya. Hindi kasi ako nakinig mabuti sa instructor ng jetski sa sobrang excited kong magbubu-vroom-vroom, kung kaya't napadpad ako sa mababaw na lugar sa gitna ng dagat. Na-stuck 'yung elisi ng motor sa buhanginan at hindi ko maitulak mag-isa ang jetski kaya may nag-rescue pa sa akin, err, sa jetski na gamit ni Teh. Hahaha. K.

Hindi nauubusan sina Teh ng venue para mag-picture. Maybe, kasama rin ang interior and exterior designs ng resort sa binayaran namin. At may mga lugar na very peaceful kung saan libre mag-moment at mag-unwind... :D

Hindi uso sa resort na ito ang apartment-type na hotel. Only villas. Sa halagang Php 4200 (as of December 2011), may Grand Villa, which is good for 4 persons, na kayong pupuwedeng matuluyan. Php 1050 per head for a 5-star lodging? Good deal for a very clean and spacious villa which is on par with Shangri-la hotel chain standards! :)

At ang tarush! May weighing scale pa sa loob... Either pang-weigh ng check-in baggage before going to the airport or pantimbang ng sarili kung nahihiyang o hindi sa bakasyon dito.

Very strategic ang location ng mga villas dahil tiyak tatamarin ka nang lumabas para kumain. Nasa looban na kasi ng resort ang mga villas. And for that, there are 3 restaurants on your aide. Very clean and very aristocratic ang setting ng bawat restaurant. Abangan ang in-depth food adventures ni Teh sa dalawang restaurant ng resort na ito. :)

If you're not on a very tight budget, staying in this resort is highly recommended. Besides, this is the nearest hotel, as mentioned by their local tourism page admin, to Anguib Beach and Palaui Island. At kung tatapat ng sobrang maulan na weather ang stay ninyo sa Santa Ana, perfect mag-stay rito dahil within the resort, marami ka nang magagawa. :)

However, recently their lodging prices for each type of villa has increased by around 20~25%. As of July 2012, the Sun City resort announce these new rates on their Facebook page:

• Deluxe Oceanfront (5 bedrooms good for 10pax) P22,800.00 
• Superior Villa (3 bedrooms good for 6pax) P10,500.00 
• Grand Villa (2 bedrooms good for 4pax) P6,200.00

Suwerte lang na nakapasok na kami rito bago sila nagtaas ng rates. Anyway, I hope na nag-enjoy kayo sa exploration natin ng Sun City. ^_^
