Iguig Calvary Hills ~ your one-stop "Station"

The second part of Teh's trilogy, presenting one of the pilgrimage sites in Cagayan Valley - the Iguig Calvary Hills! :)

Getting here: In Tuguegarao City, ride a tricycle to Don Domingo parkingan. Pero siyempre kung malapit ka lang doon, sipagin maglakad baka ma-stroke. Pagdating sa parkingan, maghanap ng van na papuntang Alcala, Amulung o Santa Ana (basta papuntang norte). Ang one-way fare sa van (to or from Iguig) ay nasa Php 50 bawat pasahero. Dahil likas na mababait ang mga Cagayano (hindi ka nila pagtitripang iligaw), maaaring mag-request sa driver na ibaba ka sa kantong papunta sa Calvary Hills. :)

~ The Uphill Entrance ~

Pagbaba ng van galing Tuguegarao, kinakailangan pang tumawid sa kabila upang makaakyat sa Calvary Hills. Napanganga na lang ako noong nakita ko kung gaano ka-steep ang aakyatin papunta sa entrance. Perfect penitensya ito lalo na sa mga katulad kong napabayaan sa kusina. Medyo maulan pa noong nagpunta ako roon kaya doble ingat ako sa paglalakad... So up we go! ^_^

~ First stop: The 4-century old well ~

Pag-akyat ng Calvary, bago mo masilayan ang St. James Church, sa bandang kaliwa makikita ang balon na ito. I salute the local government of Iguig for having this site preserved. :)

Sadly, hindi na bumaba si Teh sa mismong well dahil mula sa itaas, natanaw kong sarado ito. Off-peak season kasi ako nagpunta at wala namang tao masyado kaya siguro hindi ito binuksan. Magwi-wish pa naman sana ako... :(

Amazed na amazed ako nang makita ko ang itinatagong kagandahan sa likod ng pader sa entrance. Kahit pa naulan noong nagpunta ako rito, nabighani pa rin ako ng view na makikita bago ang mga Stations of the Cross. Love at first sight. :)

During Holy Week, sabi ng aking gabay, dito sa gate na ito talaga pumapasok ang mga mag-i-Stations of the Cross. (Kaya last stations agad ang nakita ko roon sa tanging entrance na bukas).

Mula sa 12th station, kinunan ko na lamang ng litrato ang mga naunang stations na kayang abutin ng aking lente. Hindi ko na kasi napuntahan ng malapitan ang mga stations dahil lumalakas na ang hangin at ulan. Pero nagsisisi akong hindi ko sila nalapitan dahil na-realize ko, pagsubok lang ni Lord ang malakas na hangin at ulan... :(

Well, for the 14th station, which is 'yung paglilibing kay Jesus, I was not able to see larger-than-life statues depicting that scene. Might as well pray over it inside the St. James Church. But I was thinking, 'yung statue sa bungad kanina (the 4th picture of this post) ang 14th station, dahil it depicts the resurrection of Christ in front of the soldiers, above the empty tomb.

Sa bawat tourist destination tulad ng Iguig Calvary Hills, hindi mawawala ang souvenir shop. May mga t-shirts, mugs, display figures, accessories, and rosaries ang shop na ito.

Tuwing first time akong napunta sa isang pilgrimage site, it has always been my habit to buy a rosary as a souvenir. (At dahil walang stock ng t-shirt na sakto sa akin...)

Good Friday Procession ~ the Ballesteros Way

To offer a tribute during Holy Week, nagkalkal si Teh ng mga pictures sa kanyang virtual baul na may kinalaman sa Holy Week. Sa makabagong panahon natin ngayon, unti-unting nawawala ang mga nakagawian nating tradisyon at mga sakripisyo tuwing sasapit ang Mahal na Araw. Sana ay makatulong ang trilogy ko (starting from this post) ngayong Mahal na Araw upang makapagbalik-tanaw ang mga readers ni Teh sa mga tradisyon nating mga Pilipino na hindi pupuwedeng maging absent kapag Holy Week...

Naisip ko lang na mag-trilogy starting this Maundy Thursday (sa pananaw ng mga mas late ang timezone), dahil sa trilogy mass (nakalimutan ko tawag kaya trilogy ako ng trilogy) na ino-offer ng aming simbahan, malapit sa bahay, na tumatakbo mula Huwebes Santo hanggang Sabado de Gloria (at ang final blessing ay sa Sabado de Gloria kaya no cutting masses).

Enough of the long intro. :)

To start of sa aking trilogy, I want to share 'yung favorite ko during Holy Week, especially during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday - ang prusisyon (bow). To sum it up, kadalasan pinapakita sa prusisyon ang mga important highlights ng buhay ni Hesus, prior and during His death. After that, parada naman ng iba't ibang muhka ni Maria, Ina ng ating Panginoon. Given na hindi talaga ako super religious, hindi ko kabisado ang mga pangalan ng Stations of the Cross (kaya pasensya na sa mga captions, huhu!) Tanging ang sunud-sunod lang ng mga life-size carrozas ang na-register sa utak ni Teh. :(

Noong kabataan ni Teh (dahil matanda na pala ako), nabigyan ako ng chance upang maging isang angel. Pero sa totoo lang, dahil Ilokano ang kanta, isang stanza lang ang na-memorize ko out of 8 ata 'yun na stanzas. Prior sa Salubong, dapat may mga flower petals ka nang napitas, na ilalagay naman sa basket mo, na isasaboy mo kay Maria para sa event na nabanggit. So it was like, kapag nagkasalubong na si Mary at si Jesus, kayong mga angels kakanta kayo at dapat habang kumakanta, nagsasaboy kayo ng petals kay Mary. But wait, there's more! Dapat din synchronized lahat ng angels sa pagsasaboy ng petals, hehe. Isn't that cute? :)

The Hungry Teh Eats @ West Side

Well, nothing much special about this place. Just another shopping mall in the metro. But what attracts me para magpabalik-balik dito, kahit pa 1 hour ang layo nito sa bahay, ay ang mga stalls ng masasarap na slightly high-end street foods na dito ko lang napupuntahan. Though may mga branches 'yung ibang food stalls dito, I can say that MOA is the most accessible for me. :)

Pero hindi sightseeing ang pinunta ko sa MOA noong araw na iyon. Ang ipinunta ko ay... FOOD!!! ^_^ (Disclaimer: Ang mga ratings ay personal na opinyon lamang sa overall customer experience... Mehhhhh gano'n?!)

~Food stop # 1: Musashi Takoyaki~

Obviously, Takoyaki ang binebenta nila sa stall na ito. I have to say, sa mga modern-time takoyaki sellers, they sell the best-tasting takoyaki. Secret ingredient? Probably in the sauces. I say modern-time, because my all-time takoyaki favorite will be the one being sold by Samurai Foods Inc. (branches I've seen are in Megamall and North Edsa). :)

Pero ano nga ba ang takoyaki? Literally, it pertains to a "grilled octopus".It is a common Japanese street food shaped into a ball and it is made out of pancake batter, filled with octopus and vegetables. Aside from takoyaki, meron din silang tinitindang yakisoba (stir-fried noodles). Itadakimasu[1]! ^_^

Matapos ma-satisfy ang Japanese street food craving, bigla naman akong naghanap ng kung anong maalat. Medyo matamis kasi 'yung sauce ng takoyaki kaya salty food ang next na hinahanap ng aking taste buds. So lakad-lakad ng konti hanggang sa nakatagpo ako ng... naCHOS! :D Sa food stall na ito, aside from nachos, may mga hotdogs, corndogs and other typical American snacks silang tinitinda. Nom nom nom... BURRRRRRRRRPPPPP!!! (S'cuse me... ='>)

~Food stop # 3: Mac's Deli Vigan Empanada and Okoy~

Reminds me of my province, Ilocos Sur. :) Satisfied na sana ang tiyan ni Teh sa naunang dalawang food stalls nang biglang tumambad sa akin ang... VIGAN EMPANADA! ^_^

Masarap din ang timpla nila, on par with those na binebenta sa tabi ng Plaza Burgos in Vigan. :) However one annoying incident happened (at hindi ko ikukuwento dahil baka isipin niyong hater much ako)... 

Anyway, just like in Vigan, live show din ang pagluluto ng Vigan Empanada, made from the ready made batter and vegetable mix. Just wait for few minutes, ready to eat na!

Black Gold White Maroon ~ the Thomasian visits UP

Nais kong simulan ang buwan na ito, kahit sobrang late na dahil March ngayon (so?!) by showing you some very amateur and very non-professional pictures ng aking pamantasan(karamihan kasi blurred dahil sa pasmado kong kamay). Marahil ang post na ito ay makapagbibigay sa inyo ng bahagyang idea kung sino si Teh bilang estudyante.

Segue lang mga Teh at Kuya, sa mga curious kong mambabasa, isa po akong Tomasino, specifically isa akong Inhinyero. :)

A glimpse of U-Belt vicinity

Maaaring para sa mga kapwa kong mag-aaral na nagmula sa maski anong pamantasan, hindi natin maituturing na tourist spot ang isang unibersidad. Gayunpaman, hindi sarado ang pintuan ng mga pamantasan natin dito sa Pilipinas upang tumanggap ng mga foreigners. Marami kasing exchange student na nag-aaral sa mga pamantasan natin, sa kumpiyansa nilang kayang mag-provide ng ating bansa ng quality education. Bukod sa turismo kasi, isa ito sa mga assets natin. Lalung-lalo na at majority ng mga Pilipino, magaling sa wikang Ingles. Kaya hindi problema ang nosebleeding, kahit pa sa aming mga inhinyero na nakalinya ang expertise sa technical skills.

Para sa katulad kong feeling turista everywhere, may mga nakita rin naman akong potential tourist attractions sa UST. Maswerte ka kapag napunta ka rito ng gabi at nataong may malaking event dahil tiyak crowded ang kalangitan ng mga fireworks display. Kulang na lang sumali sila sa International Pyromusical Competition. (As in, gano'n sila kagaling, pang-competition!) 'Yun nga lang, tamad ako mag-abang kadalasan ng fireworks display 'pag may event. Madalas kasi, 'yun ang grand finale ng mga events sa UST. Kaya heto, nauwi na lang ako sa pag-picture ng night view sa may 4th floor ng Educ Bldg. :)

At hindi lang sa fireworks display famous ang aking Alma Mater. Very historical din ang University na ito. Although replica na lang ng original UST sa Intramuros ang Main Building, sa loob nito ay mayroong museum na open for public viewing. Kung student, faculty or employee ka, free entrance. Not sure if free entrance din for non-Thomasians. Pero kung hindi man free, worth it pa rin kung may bayad lalo na kung mahilig kang mag-museum hopping. Well-preserved kasi ang mga historical artifacts ng museum na ito.

Aside from the museum, other UST establishments open for public are the Santissimo Rosario Parish located at the left side of the University (facing España Blvd.) and UST hospital and carpark mall at the right. :)

Kung open for public na mga pamantasan na rin lang ang napag-uusapan, hindi rin mawawala sa listahan ang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas. Sa aking side trip bilang isang mag-aaral na inhinyero, nabigyan ako ng pagkakataong makabisita sa Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Building ng UP, salamat sa aming campus exchange activity.

Kung sa English hindi nagno-nosebleed si Teh, dito sa building na ito naganap ang pagdurugo ng aking ilong. Naki-sit in kasi kami noon sa Electronics II class. X_X

Akala ko noon, malawak na masyado ang aking eskwelahan para lakad-lakarin. Pero huwag ka, dito sa UP, may mga panahon na kailangan mo pang sumakay ng jeepney upang makarating sa paroroonan. Kuwento kasi sa akin ng kaibigan kong nag-aaral sa UP, lalo na noong early years nila, depende sa subject and schedule, nagbi-building hopping pa sila upang umattend sa lahat ng mga klase nila sa isang araw.

Well para sa mga mahilig maglakad at magtipid tulad ni Teh, kembot naman kung maglalakad ka from one building or landmark to another. Isipin mo na lang, exercise 'yun. :)

Sa nakakaalam po kung ano ang pangalan ng hall na ito, mangyaring ipagbigay-alam kay Teh. :)

Sa aking pagbisita sa UP, heto talaga ang hindi ko malilimutan - ang Beach House Canteen! Bukod sa sikat ito dahil sa kanilang masarap ang inihaw na barbeque at iba pang ulam, may experience kami ng mga schoolmates ko na hanggang ngayon hindi pa rin ako makaget-over sa katatawa kapag naaalala ko. Kasi habang nakapila kami ng mga kasama ko upang bumili ng pagkain, nagtatawanan kami about something. Eh napalakas tawa namin. Ayan tuloy, hindi nakapagpigil ang taga-canteen na sitahin kami. Kaya lang, fail. Sabi kasi sa amin "SSSSSHHHHH!!! 'WAG KAYONG MAINGAY, MAY KUMAKAIN! :)" with smiling face talaga. Natawa lang ako lalo (pero kinimkim ko na ang tawa ko) dahil sa delivery ng paninita niya. Funniest experience in UP Diliman so far! (Babaw ni Teh, 'no?) :))))

At sino ba naman ang hindi nakakaalam ng Sunken Garden? The place where most of the UP-wide events are being held and live bands perform. Madalas ang mga event nila ay open sa public. :)

Ang UST at UP ay dalawa lamang sa mga pamantasang matatagpuan dito sa Maynila. Mga lugar na kay sarap balikan upang magpalipas-oras... :)
